RIDE START DELAYED UNTIL 9AM
We begin in the picturesque artist village of Micanopy and then travel along a low volume country road until we meet up with the paved Gainesville Hawthorne State Trail. We take the trail into the heart of Gainesville and have our mid ride break in Depot Park. As we return to Micanopy we make a side trip to the the Alachua Lake Overlook in Paynes Prairie State Park. From the Overlook we return to Micanopy. Many of us will lunch in one of the restaurants in Micanopy.
Micanopy "The town that time forgot" is the oldest continually inhabited community in non coastal Florida. It features an active artists community, a handful of unique restaurants, an outstanding bake shop and its Old Florida atmosphere has landed it a number of movies. We park on the street near the Old Florida Cafe.
We travel the paved The Gainesville Hawthorn State Trail for 21 of the 35 mile ride. The trail is paved the entire way and contains numerous informative plaques. This is a rail trail with very little grade. The other 14 miles of our ride we are on a lightly traveled country road.
The Gainesville Hawthorn State Trail goes all the way into and ends in Gainesville's modern Depot Park. Depot Park has restrooms, picnic tables, a snack bar, walking and biking trails and a museum.
We make a side trip to the Alachua Overlook in Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park. This side trip is well worth the extra mile or two. You can picture the steam boats that sailed on the lake in the 1880s. You can see I75 and US 441 in the distance while imagining how this must have looked 140 years ago.
